According to Martirosyan, from Proto-Armenian *ałǰ-i, from *alg-i, by metathesis from *agl-i, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂(e)gʰl-i, a frozen locative of *h₂(e)gʰl- (darkness, fog, mist). Cognate with Ancient Greek ἀχλύς (akhlús, mist; darkness) and Old Prussian aglo (rain).
