From Proto-Iranian *hajáhram, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *saȷ́ʰásram, from Proto-Indo-European *sm̥-ǵʰéslom, from *sm̥- (one; full) +‎ *ǵʰéslom (thousand). Cognate with Old Median *hazāram and Sanskrit सहस्र (sahasra).
