Reconstruction:Proto-Balto-Slavic/kelˀtéi
Proto-Balto-Slavic
editEtymology
editGenerally derived from a Proto-Indo-European *kelH-, though the further detailed identity of the root is disputed:
- Buck, Derksen, Hamp: From undetermined *kelH- (“to rise”), akin to Latin excellō (“excel”).
- Rasmussen: From *kelh₃-, akin to Ancient Greek κολώνη (kolṓnē, “column”), Latin columen (“column”), Proto-Germanic *hulliz (“hill”).
- Kaukienė: From an earlier Narten-typе ablauting stem *kēl- ~ *kil-, derived from one of the above hypotheses.
