Etymology edit

From an earlier *stálan, from Proto-Indo-European *sth₂-o-lo-m, from Proto-Indo-European *steh₂- (to stand [up]). Cognate with Sanskrit स्थलम् (sthalam, firm ground, foundation) and further akin to Proto-Germanic *stōlaz (seat, stool, throne) (full-grade).
