EtymologyEdit

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *stalas, from Proto-Indo-European *stoh₂los, from *steh₂- (to stand). Equivalent to *stojati (to stand) +‎ *-lo. Cognate with Lithuanian stãlas, Old Prussian stalis and Gothic 𐍃𐍄𐍉𐌻𐍃 (stōls).
