From Proto-Celtic *barnati, possibly from Proto-Indo-European *gʷr̥-né-H-ti ~ *gʷr̥-n-H-énti, from *gʷerH- (“to praise, elevate”) +‎ *-né- +‎ *-ti.^[1]^[2]^[3]
