Possibly from Proto-Indo-European *h₂éry-o-s (“host”), perhaps from an original *yo-stem. Cognate with Proto-Germanic *arjaz (“distinguished, esteemed”), Sanskrit आर्य (ārya, “kind, hospitable”).[1][2]
