From Proto-Indo-European *dʰerg-os, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰerg- (to dim, darken); compare Old English deorc (dark) and Tocharian A tärkär, Tocharian B tarkär (cloud).

Akin to Lithuanian drėgti (to get damp, wet) and possibly Proto-Balto-Slavic *dárˀgāˀ (bad weather).
