Generally related to Ancient Greek σπλήν (splḗn), Latin liēn, Sanskrit प्लीहन् (plīhán) Lithuanian blužnis, Proto-Slavic *selzenь, Old Armenian փայծաղն (pʻaycałn), and Avestan 𐬯𐬞𐬆𐬭𐬆𐬰𐬀𐬥- (spər^əzan-), but a Proto-Indo-European root is hard to determine due irregular sound correspondences (presumed due to taboo).
