Etymology edit

Probably borrowed from Proto-Germanic *spindaz, compare Middle High German spint (fat, lard, sapwood) and Dutch spint (spinthout (sapwood)). Alternatively (but less likely) from Proto-Finno-Permic *pinta, if related to Erzya пондакш (pondakš), пондаз (pondaz), Moksha понда (ponda), Udmurt педло (pedlo).[1]
