Proto-Finnic

edit

Etymology

edit

Disputed, but cognate with Proto-Samic *orēs. Traditionally held to be a derivation of Proto-Finno-Ugric *urɜ (whence Hungarian úr, but note that it also has alternative etymologies). LÄGLOS however supports an alternative etymology by Hofstra, which instead posits a borrowing from Proto-Germanic *ūraz (aurochs), in which case the original meaning must have been "male animal".

Noun

edit

*uros[1]

  1. (Northern Finnic) male
  2. (Northern Finnic) man
