Etymology edit

A derivation from *aiwaz, *aiwō. The -k- suffix is uncertain, but Kroonen favors a comparison with Latin iūgis (continual) and Ancient Greek ὑγιής (hugiḗs, healthy, sound, wholesome) from Proto-Indo-European *h₂yew-gʷih₃- and *h₂yu-gʷih₃- respectively, to assume a reconstruction of Pre-Germanic *h₂oyu-gʷih₃- with an original meaning of "ever-living".

Pronunciation edit
