Alternative formsEdit

EtymologyEdit

Uncertain; perhaps from a pre-Indo-European substrate word.[1] Otherwise, outside of Germanic, it may be related to Proto-Indo-European *bʰeh₂- (to shine, glisten) or to Sanskrit बभस्ति (babhasti, to chew, eat), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰes-.[2] However, also compare Latin baca (berry),[3] or fascis (bundle).[1]
