Etymology

edit

Traditionally from Proto-Indo-European *bʰlā-d- (to offer, sacrifice), comparing Latin flāmen (priest), but this root is largely abandoned by modern scholars. Possibly from the same root as *blōþą (blood); compare the development of Proto-West Germanic *blōdisōn (to mark with blood > to bless).

This etymology is incomplete. You can help Wiktionary by elaborating on the origins of this term.
