Proto-Germanic
editEtymology
editVia pre-Germanic *ph₂ǵóm, from Proto-Indo-European *peh₂ǵ- (“to fit, fasten, fix”).[1] Cognate with Sanskrit पाजस् (pā́jas, “surface, side”), Latin pāgus (“division, district”) and pangō (“fasten, fix”, verb). The root is otherwise absent from Germanic, but see *fastuz.
