From Pre-Germanic *keh₂péh₂, from Proto-Indo-European *keh₂po- (land, garden), from *keh₂p- (to seize). Related to Ancient Greek κῆπος (kêpos, garden, orchard) and possibly Albanian kopsht (garden).
