From Proto-Indo-European *méh₂-meh₂-, reduplication of a base *méh₂- (mama, mother). Cognate with Latin mamma (mother, mama, nurse), Lithuanian mãma, momà (mother), Latvian mãma (mother), Old Irish muimme (foster mother), Irish mam (mother).
