Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *wíterom, adverbial accusative of *wíteros, from *wí (“apart”) +‎ *-teros (comparative). Particularly close cognate with Sanskrit वितर (vitara, “(leading) further away”). For the suffix development, compare *aftrą, but contrast the adjective *anþeraz.
