From Proto-Indo-European *wíterom, adverbial accusative of *wíteros, from *wí (apart) +‎ *-teros (comparative).[1] Particularly close cognate with Sanskrit वितर (vitara, (leading) further away).[2] For the suffix development, compare *aftrą, but contrast the adjective *anþeraz.
