From *wr̥trás (shield, cover, obstacle) +‎ *gʰan- (to slay) +‎ *-ás, from Proto-Indo-European *wer- (to cover), *gʷʰen- (to strike, slay) and *-ós (agentive suffix), respectively. Literally, "the destroyer of obstacles".
