From Proto-Indo-European *ml̥dus (soft, weak),[1] from *mel-. Cognate with Ancient Greek βλαδύς (bladús), Latin mollis, Proto-Germanic *mildijaz, Proto-Slavic *moldъ, Old Armenian մեղկ (mełk).
