EtymologyEdit

Probably fossilized present passive participle of Proto-Balto-Slavic *galḗˀtei (to have capacity) + *-ěmъ, cognate with Lithuanian galėti (to be able) (present participle galėjimas). Further akin to Lithuanian galià (power, might).

For the suffix, compare Latin volaemum (large pear).
