From Proto-Balto-Slavic *lágīˀtei, from Proto-Indo-European *logʰ-éye-ti, causative of *legʰ- (to lie). Cognate with Gothic 𐌻𐌰𐌲𐌾𐌰𐌽 (lagjan, to lay), English lay.
