Formed as *rězati (to cut) +‎ *-ъkъ, from Proto-Indo-European *wreh₁ǵ-. Could be also seen as k-extension of the athematic counter-part (u-stem) of *rězvъ (frisky, quick, energetic) (wo-stem).
