From *à- (nominalizing prefix) +‎ *kɔ (to crow), with a partial reduplication of the verb-root *kɔ occurring, ultimately Onomatopoeic. Found widespread throughout Niger-Congo languages of common onomatopeic origin, see Ayere akɔkɔ, Igbo ọ̀kụkụ̀ (fowl), Proto-Edoid *O-khɔkhɔ, Proto-Bantu *nkókó, Akan akokɔ, Ukaan ɛ̀kɔ̀kɔ̀.
