Etymology

From New Latin Rhynchops (“from the Greek ῥύγχος and ὤψ, meaning beak-face”) + nigra (“black”), named by Linnaeus.

1. (archaic) A taxonomic species within the family Rynchopidae – black skimmer, now known as Rynchops niger.
2. (proscribed) sometimes mistakenly applied to the Indian skimmer, now known as Rhynchops albicollis.
