Etymology edit
First attested as scaeywijc in 1383. Derived from a contracted compound of Middle Dutch schade (“damage, disadvantage”) and wijk (“village, settlement”). The name either refers to the inhospitable natural environment around the settlement or to its small size. Compare Meterik, Oostenrijk, Schadewijk and Schadijk.
