Etymology edit

First attested as de schina in the mid-11th century. Of uncertain etymology. Perhaps derived from the hydronym *Skinion or from schijn (land cleared for agriculture) with op (on) and the hydronym Geul added to aid identification. Compare Schimmert, Schinnen and Schinveld.
