Etymology edit
From Latin sīmia (“monkey, ape”) + troglodytes (“cave-dwelling”), coined by Johann Friedrich Blumenbach in 1776. He took the specific epithet from Homo troglodytes, which Carl Linnaeus had used in 1758, and which did not refer to the chimpanzee.
Proper noun edit
- (obsolete) A taxonomic species within the family Simiidae – the chimpanzee, now placed in multiple species in the genus Pan.
Usage notes edit
This species became obsolete in 1816, when Lorenz Oken transferred it to Pan troglodytes, but continued to see sporadic use for some time afterward.
