From Sothis (Sirius) +‎ -ic (forming adjectives),[1] a variant of earlier Sothiac, from French sothiaque,[2] ultimately from Ancient Greek σωθιακός (sōthiakós, Sothic), from Σῶθις (Sôthis, Sirius) and -κός (-kós, -ic, forming adjectives).
