From earlier Takhoma (“the area south of Seattle”), borrowed from Lushootseed təˈkhoʊʔməʔ, təlˈkhoʊʔbəʔ, təloʊʔl (the area surrounding Mount Rainier), from təˡqʷuʔbəʔ (“mother of waters”) in a direct reference to Mount Rainier.
