Mingrelian?

edit

Wouldn't Svan (e.g. შუ̂ა̈ნ, მუშუ̂ა̈ნ) be the likelier source on phonological grounds @კვარია? Nicodene (talk) 23:01, 20 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Nicodene: Not necessarily. Svan შუ̂ა̈ნ (šûän) is Svaneti, so why reverse the meaning? For Svan მუშუ̂ა̈ნ (mušûän), are we to assume that the Abkhaz know the function of Svan მუ- (mu-)? უ̂ა ~ ო (ûa ~ o) is common in all Kartvelian languages anyway, so it could be borrowed from Mingrelian before that change happened, or, alternatively, this change could've occured in Abkhaz itself, where indeed it's common as well. In fact {{R:xmf:Chirikba:2006|page=30}} erroneously assumed that this feature of Mingrelian is the effect of Abkhaz "influence" on specifically Mingrelian, when in fact in happens in all Kartvelian languages, even at the level of Proto languages. Technically even Georgian სვანი (svani) fits too, for which compare Abkhaz ашәамахь (aŝʷamaxʲ)Mingrelian სომეხი (somexi). So in this case I think it makes sense to derive from the language with which Abkhaz had the most intensive contacts. კვარია (talk) 09:25, 21 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
Fair enough, thank you. Nicodene (talk) 10:37, 21 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
