Question

edit

@Mlgc1998 It looks like your only Mainland source is Douglas, which is only for Amoy (Xiamen) unless it specifies otherwise (right?). So I was wondering why you put "ml" (which would indicate Xiamen, Quanzhou, and Zhangzhou) instead of just "xm". Mar vin kaiser (talk) 06:53, 13 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Mar vin kaiser Douglas (1873) is a bit vague on that sometimes. Sometimes if I compared before with Zhou (2006) 闽南方言大词典, there were times that 闽方大 did not specify as well which dialect and just had the one pronunciation which it assumes for all 3 main dialects and sometimes I saw as well in Douglas (1873) that it was like that or sometimes if I was not so sure, just putting xm was what I just left it with, but there were a few times as well that I felt maybe Douglas didn't mean for it to be just xm, but maybe also zz or qz or all 3 of them, but the text just put the one pronunciation with a vague idea which dialect did they mean by it or if it meant to all 3 main dialects. For a term like this which was a sort of historical secret gambling game, that historically seems to have been widely played by whoever Hokkien speakers it spread to, I was not sure if it was just to one specific dialect they meant or they meant it for all 3 main mainland dialects. @Mlgc1998: For Douglas, best to just put Xiamen if it doesn't explicitly say. For 闽南方言大词典, btw, it's found on p. 695, and it only gives Xiamen and Zhangzhou. --Mar vin kaiser (talk) 00:20, 14 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
