There doesn't seem to be much attestation for this particular string, as was pointed out on the talk page by Equinox back in 2017. I was only able to find one Google Books use (which I added), and a handful of examples on Twitter. However, there may be other variations that are citable. While searching for this I came across variations using "poisonous", and also where the second part is replaced by "no [kind of] fruit", "bad fruits", etc. Apparently there's a Vietnamese saying cây độc không trái, gái độc không con, though I can't say for sure whether the English is calqued from that. 98.170.164.88 21:33, 29 December 2022 (UTC)
- Surely this is biblical in origin? Matthew 7:20 (KJV) 'by their fruits ye shall know them' and Luke 6:44 (KJV) 'every tree is known by his own fruit'. There are any number of variations of these phrases that can be found on Google Books such as 'by your fruit you shall be known' and 'a tree is known by its fruit'. We'd be better off creating a couple of entries for these phrases and possibly some of their more common variants than keeping this obscure and unattested SOP variant IMO. --Overlordnat1 (talk) 12:45, 30 December 2022 (UTC)
