give someone head, give someone rein, etc.?

Chambers 1908 has give line, head, rein, etc., "to give more liberty or scope", and remarks that "the metaphor [is] from angling and driving". (Obviously "give someone head" these days usually means oral sex, heh.) Equinox ◑ 14:09, 4 September 2019 (UTC)
