Etymology
editWe say: "Figuratively cut up and tossed into a pot like meat." However, I note that John Camden Hotten's Slang Dictionary (1873) offers two other conflicting (!) etymologies: 1. "from the classic custom of putting the ashes of the dead in an urn"; 2. "most probably means to go out of all shape, as metal in the melting-pot". Equinox ◑ 15:56, 27 September 2020 (UTC)
