Same etymology?

edit

Surely the noun and verb senses are the same etymology.... the verb just has more detail? Maybe it needs less detail? How's it go into Icelandic??

Additional sense

edit

Century has the sense "8. [< handle, n.] To furnish with a handle or handles; as, to handle a teacup." So far, the only citations I can find are:

  • 1917, Leona Dalrymple, Kenny, page 226:
"A man who wants to know if you must have a north light to paint by will think it a rule of the guild to double-handle teacups."
  • 1971, Ceramics (volumes 22-23 / issues 263-274), page 8:
After the raw materials have been finely ground and blunged the resulting clay bodies are stored in 15 tanks [...]. The automatic ramikin machine, which can also make and handle cups, and the plate dryer are by Netzsch.

Maybe a type of beer glass

edit

Heard in the pub last night: "can I have mine in a handle?". The customer wanted one of the old-fashioned glass tankards with "dimples" and a handle on the side, as opposed to the modern pint glass with no handle. Equinox 09:10, 20 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

Return to "handle" page.
