On May 15 2006 I added an external link under a "trivia" category to the entry for "hyena." Later that day it was reversed by Connel MacKenzie, a Wiktionary administrator.

I would like to understand why, so that I can better contribute to Wiktionary.

My motivation for adding the link is as follows. At podictionary I produce a daily podcast (lasting 2 or 3 minutes) focused on a single common word, its etymology and related trivia. The intent is entertainment and education. I have done about 250 episodes to date. I hoped by adding a link under "trivia" (a subcategory that seemed legit from the Wiktionary info) I could both add to the value of Wiktionary and also attract more listeners to my podcast.

I have added similar links to the entries for "umpire" "edgy" and "proclivity." These have not been reversed.

If it is deemed that linking word-to-word to podictionary is an abuse of Wiktionary then I will stop adding and remove those I've done. However, I submit that adding a link that is well researched, fun and directly related to a dictionary context should be of mutual benefit.

In response to your e-mail message, I've restored your edit and replied on your talk page. I think we need to discuss this with other sysops and other Wiktionary contributors on the beer parlour discussion page. --Connel MacKenzie T C 15:33, 31 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks Connel Based on this I will begin to add similar links as I post new podcast episodes, but I won't go back and add a whole pile of links to words for my previous episodes until the beer parlour works it out. I note that wiktionary users must be using the links and listening to my material because I see edits to wiktionary in line with my podcast content.

Slang for sexually predatory young girl? edit

Saw this on a comment thread on a blog somewhere and had to look it up. Apparently it's like a cougar but with the ages reversed, i.e. younger girl who pursues older men. It's mentioned in a 2009 article here [1] so we might be able to attest it by now. Equinox 22:45, 28 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

Return to "hyena" page.
