Soft Drinks - Etymology
Perhaps I am using the wrong term when I say "etymology," but I was asked by a friend recently what the origin of the term "soft drink" is.
My Hypothesis: the term "soft drink" probably originated during prohibition, when a "hard drink" would be any drink that contained alcohol. Many so-called "soda fountains" also had a back room where hard drinks could be had. To differentiate between a non-alcoholic drink and and alcoholic drink, the term "soft drink," meaning a drink that does not contain alcohol, was coined.

Hey, I was checking my newspeak manual recently and I saw that some people spell this as 'softdrink' (no space needed) --Geographyinitiative (talk) 01:41, 10 January 2019 (UTC)
