First attested as szyntinge in 1329. Borrowed from West Frisian Tsjeintgum, derived in turn from Old Frisian *Szynta (“a personal name”) suffixed with the collectivising suffix -ingi- and hēm (“home, settlement”). Compare Brantgum and Mantgum.
