German edit

Etymology edit

Possibly derived from Tscheche in analogy to terms like Lombardei, Slowakei, Türkei or as back-formation from Tschechoslowakei

Pronunciation edit

  • IPA(key): /t͡ʃɛˈçaɪ̯/
  • (file)
  • Rhymes: -aɪ̯

Proper noun edit

die Tschechei f (proper noun, usually definite, definite genitive der Tschechei)

  1. (dated) Czech Republic (a country in Central Europe)
Synonyms: (common) Tschechien, (officialese) Tschechische Republik, (historical) Böhmen und Mähren

Usage notes edit

  • Now usually avoided and considered dismissive because of associations with the Sudeten crisis and the Protectorate, particularly with the Nazi propaganda term Resttschechei. However, in some of the regions bordering on the Czech Republic it may still be usual as a vernacular form.
