Wiktionary:Changing username

Before filing a request please consider the following:

  • If the change is small, such as adding or removing numbers or changing vowels, it is normally better to change your signature to alter your appearance.
  • It is quicker and easier to simply create a new account and link to your old contributions. Dead accounts are harmless.
  • Signatures and other hardcoded text will not be changed, you will have to manually edit to get rid of them.
  • Single Unified Login: To usurp an existing account:
    1. Please add {{subst:usurpation requested}} or similar to their talk page. If that account has email enabled, please email them and explain the situation. Wait for a week after giving notification for any objections, then post the result here.
    2. Please post a link to a diff in a project where you are active. The diff should be an edit made from your account to a talk page or similar acknowledging that yes, it's you making this request. See this example.
  • You are asking for a favour; please be polite and remain patient. In particular, do not pester bureaucrats.

Once you've decided that a change is the best way forward:

  1. Check Special:Listusers to see whether your desired name is not already taken. While it is possible to hijack existing user accounts without their permission, this is undesirable and will require a special reason.
  2. Click add your request and explain clearly why you want to make the change, you must sign your request from your old account.
  3. Wait patiently for one of our bureaucrats to deal with your request.

Once fulfilledEdit

Your old account will not exist anymore. All edits and other user data (including preferences and watchlist) from your old account will be reattributed to your new account. You can log in with your old password. A log of these changes is kept at Special:Log/renameuser and the requests are archived here.

  1. You should move your old User: and User_talk: pages to your new user name; don't just copy the content.
  2. If you wish you can recreate your old account and request that an administrator block it to prevent other users from impersonating you.

I'm planning on creating a global account. Since i'm most active on wiktionary, my first step would be to do that here. Pass a Method (talk) 11:12, 29 September 2014 (UTC)

Done. Special:CentralAuth. —Stephen (Talk) 05:46, 30 September 2014 (UTC)

I wish to usurp the target user account to complete 'Single Unified Login'. I'm the owner of User:Anup's 'SUL' and have got the target username usurped on multiple Wikimedia projects. I wish to take over the username 'Anup' here as well (diff. link on en-wiki (home project) of usurpation). I've just posted the usurpation notice on target user account's talk page. They do not appear to have email feature enabled. Please do let me know if I missed something in my this request. IndianWikipedian (talk) 11:08, 5 December 2014 (UTC)

Hi. I am working on it. In trying to complete your rename, I have received an error message that says "The chosen username is too similar to existing usernames." I am looking into what can be done about this. Please bear with me. —Stephen (Talk) 16:22, 5 December 2014 (UTC)
I am still checking, but I suspect that you will not be able to use the name User:Anup. On this page, it states that "a global rename is not technically possible if there are attached or unattached accounts associated with the target username". The name that you want to usurp, User:Anup, is an unattached account. In 2007, we did not have global accounts. I don’t think I have any way to delete, change, or usurp this unattached account now. If I learn of a way to do it, I will let you know, but you may have to select a different name. —Stephen (Talk) 17:34, 5 December 2014 (UTC)
There appears to be some confusion. You've globally renamed my User:Anup to User:Anup (usurp). I really didn't ask you to rename my existing User:Anup on other projects but User:IndianWikipedian on this project. If it could not be done, Just say no and let me at least have User:Anup SUL on other attached projects.
And, If you ask me, I've a solution. If you had just renamed my User:IndianWikipedian to User:Anup here (not global, because I already had them). I could be able to attach it with my existing SUL using password method. You've messed up all stuffs. Please bring me back User:Anup SUL. I dont want to have an account on Wiktionary. Anupmehra -Let's talk! 20:59, 5 December 2014 (UTC)
The renaming software has changed recently, so we cannot rename an account only on a single wiki. We can only do a global rename across all wikis. The method that you used to get your Anup account on a few other individual wikis no longer exists.
You cannot get a global rename when there is an old account on some wiki that uses the name unless you usurp it. To usurp it, it is necessary to rename Anup to something like Anup(usurp) and that moves all Anup pages to Anup(usurp), which frees the name Anup for you. This is how the renaming process has worked for years, but the recent software change has affected this and now the original Anup account on Wiktionary did not move (because it was unattached to your account). Only your Anup pages on the other wikis moved. I am waiting for some answers from the programmers, but I don’t think it will be possible to delete or move the original Anup on this wiki, and if I can’t move it, then a global rename will not work.
Also, global rename will not permit me to move your other Anup account back to where they were because this original old Anup account already exists here. As I said, if I can find a way to do it, I will. Right now I do not see how it is possible. If we can’t find a way to move everything back, then you will have to select a different name that has not been used before on any wiki. Let’s hope the programmers will have an answer for this. —Stephen (Talk) 21:46, 5 December 2014 (UTC)
Ugh, this is going very far! I asked in my request that I want to rename to User:Anup to complete my Single User Login that I already had on multiple projects. I also linked the relevant links on here in my request.
Now I understand the messed-up situation here. You were not aware that moving a local account will move a global account (that's mine). You did a unwanted move resulting out of your misunderstanding or lack of understanding.
As unattached accounts are unaffected the global move, Why couldn't I be renamed back globally to Anup? I'm not sure how local User:Anup account here create any conflict in this case, as it didn't earlier.
I don't want to be victim of nothing. User:Anup is unregisted account now on other projects. Any person may register that. I think, I'll do it and create my SUL again but what..I would lose my all contributions till this date, I've made. That's okay, but I'll get my original username back. Thank you very much! -Anup (usurp) (talk) 22:04, 5 December 2014 (UTC)
I apologize for wordings of my comment. But I'm frustrated. Sorry, anyway! Anup (usurp) (talk) 22:06, 5 December 2014 (UTC)
  • @Stephen G. Brown: for such a request, you should ask a Steward to complete, as they still have access to the local rename facility. –xeno 22:18, 5 December 2014 (UTC)
It won’t permit me to rename back globally to Anup, because it sees the local User:Anup account here and considers the name Anup to be already in use by someone else. The local User:Anup account has to be moved somehow. I think the programmers will be able to help with this. As xeno said, they still have the ability to do a local rename. I have put in a request to have this done. —Stephen (Talk) 22:29, 5 December 2014 (UTC)
Okay, the original old Anup account has been moved to Anup (usurped2), and your Anup (usurp) account has been moved globally to User:Anup. It is finished. —Stephen (Talk) 18:50, 6 December 2014 (UTC)

Reason: because I'm a guy and there are too many usernames "similar" to Googleman to let me create an account.

You only have three edits. Why don’t you just log out and open a new account under a name that you like better? As for User:Googleman, that is already an existing account on several wikis. His most recent edit was only a year ago on the Persian Wikipedia. If you can contact User:Googleman to let him know that you intend to usurp his name, and if he does not respond, it will still be a lot of work to take that username. His accounts on each wiki where it exists would have to be usurped individually. —Stephen (Talk) 23:49, 11 December 2014 (UTC)
I honestly don't care about the Persian wikipedia. I want to edit only on wiktionary, wikipedia and Tamil wikipedia. Can't you just do a local rename so that I can create the SUL after that? Take Alison for instance. She has created an SUL even though there are three other unattached accounts with lots of edits (at the bottom of the page I've linked to). I'm sure you have better things to do but pretty please?--Googlewoman (talk) 12:42, 12 December 2014 (UTC)
As of October 2014, Global renamers can no longer do local renames. The only ones who still have access to the local-rename software are the stewards at metawiki. You can try putting in a request there, but I’d say that the other Googleman already owns this account. All of those "Alisons" that you mentioned created their accounts a long time ago, before global accounts even existed. In those days, accounts were all local, but those days are long gone. I think you’re wasting your time with this name. Put in a request at metawiki if you really want to push this...see what they say. —Stephen (Talk) 22:06, 12 December 2014 (UTC)
Weird that there are only global renamers on the local wikis while all the local renamers are on meta. Shouldn't it be the other way around? Anyway thanks for taking your time. --Googlewoman (talk) 03:10, 13 December 2014 (UTC)

While I formerly attended the University of Michigan and many of my edits were focused on local municipalities and districts, I have extended my edits to a multitude of other topics. I have also been active on non-English Wikipedias (such as Esperanto and French), so "Sonĝanto" (which means "one who dreams" in Esperanto) is much more fitting. I want this done for my global account. Thank you. Michipedian (talk) 17:40, 23 December 2014 (UTC)

Please can I have my username changed

I can’t change it if it doesn’t exist. I can find no evidence that User:George-Sargeant is a registered name anywhere on Wikimedia. —Stephen (Talk) 04:30, 20 June 2015 (UTC)

Hey there! I was hoping to have my username changed because of an issue I was unaware of. I want to make sure I am in accordance with the policies and procedures of Wikipedia! I'd like to change my username. I didn't realize my username would be public when making edits on a page. My username is my personal name which I'd rather not be made public for privacy reasons.

New username desired: ss1011

Thank you in advance.

I get an error message when I try to rename you to that new name: The chosen username is too similar to existing usernames: User:S&S1011, User:Ss1011. Can you choose a less common name? —Stephen (Talk) 23:19, 18 September 2015 (UTC)

Can we try User:Rsracer

There is an edit history that still has my old name (sarahvega) visible. Is there any way that can be removed? I'll provide the link: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Racer_%28magazine%29&action=history

An admin can hide that, but I am not an admin on English Wikipedia. You would have to ask an admin there to do it for you. —Stephen (Talk) 11:32, 23 September 2015 (UTC)

New username desired: rijo vellani

Thank you in advance.

Just to make certain, are you sure that you want to have the username Rijo vellani? You said that you had rather not have your name be made public. Rijo vellani is even more public than Rijovellani. —Stephen (Talk) 13:09, 19 September 2015 (UTC)
Also, you have never made any edits here. Are you planning to, in future? SemperBlotto (talk) 13:12, 19 September 2015 (UTC)
SemperBlotto, changing the username is not like it used to be. It used to be the case that a namechange was for the local wiki only. It’s different now. Changing the username is a global action, so it changes for all wikis. —Stephen (Talk) 13:20, 19 September 2015 (UTC)

I would like to change my username to The Lab Depot. unsigned comment by User:LabDepot 15:58, 16 February 2016‎ (UTC)

You say that your current name is User:Oldname, and you want to change it to User:The Lab Depot. However, this comment was posted by User:LabDepot, and you said that you want to change User:Oldname to User:Newname. You need to check to make sure what your name is, User:Oldname or User:LabDepot, and you have to decide on whether you want to be renamed to User:Newname or User:The Lab Depot. Once you decide on what your name currently is, you must log on to that username and use it to make your request (and decide for certain whether your new name is to be User:Newname or User:The Lab Depot). —Stephen (Talk) 22:32, 16 February 2016 (UTC)

User:Oldname, User:NewnameEdit

I recently [[1]] my name ,I would be grateful if you could reflect my old edits to reflect the new name.--WavesOfTahoe (talk) 22:05, 16 February 2016 (UTC)

You claim to be User:Oldname, but another user (above) says that he is User:Oldname. Both of you cannot be User:Oldname. Also, both you and the previous user want to be renamed to User:Newname. Only one of you can have that name, and the other user asked first. I think you should select a different name. How about User:Newname-1? Upon checking the name User:Oldname, it does not appear to exist. It looks as though neither you nor the previous user is User:Oldname. If you are not User:Oldname, you have to give me your current actual name. —Stephen (Talk) 22:32, 16 February 2016 (UTC)

User:Juli AlbertoUser:Julian_LEdit

Hello. When I created my account (on Wikipedia), I used the abbreviation of my first name (Julián), and my second name (Alberto), because in other pages I used "Julian L." as a username, but there are pages where I couldn't use a dot in it (so I used Juli Alberto) and other ones where I couldn't use a space (so I used AlbertoJulian), and when I was creating my account on Wikipedia, I didn't want to use the dot, so that is why I used Juli Alberto. Lately, I was using a variant of the first option, with a underscore (instead of a space) and without the dot (Julian_L), and I would like to use it here and on the rest of Wikimedia. That variation is not new, but it's my favourite one.
--Juli Alberto (talk) 05:11, 1 May 2016 (UTC)

I attempted to rename you, but the system will not allow it. The error message says that your requested new name is too similar to existing names User:Julian l and User:JulianL. —Stephen (Talk) 09:28, 1 May 2016 (UTC)
Okay. And, what about User:AlbertoJulian? Is that username available? --Juli Alberto (talk) 19:18, 1 May 2016 (UTC)
Almost. That username is too similar to an existing username: User:Albertojulian. There is another possibility...you can go to your PREFERENCES tab under your current name, Juli Alberto, and then under Existing signature you can change it to whatever you like, such as Julian L. Your username would still be Juli Alberto, but all of your comments, anything that you sign with ~~~~, would be signed as Julian L. (Like my name, which is User:Stephen G. Brown, but signed as —Stephen) But if you still want to change your username, try to think of another one and we’ll give it another try. —Stephen (Talk) 20:04, 1 May 2016 (UTC)
Okay. So, I think I will change my signature. Another username that I could use is User:Julián Alberto, but, will it be possible?
--Juli Alberto (talk) 22:38, 1 May 2016 (UTC)
Not yet. The chosen username is too similar to an existing username: User:Julianalberto. What about something more unusual, such as User:Julián de A y L or something of that sort? —Stephen (Talk) 22:47, 1 May 2016 (UTC)
May be. I was thinking in these possibilities: User:Julián A. L., User:Julián A. de L. (my surname doesn't have a "de", but that is not important) and (finally) your option: User:Julián de A y L. Try in this order, and the first available username will be mine.
Also, I was thinking about… translating my name? For example, User:Giuliano_L (Italian), User:Giuliano Alberto (Italian), User:Giuliano A. L. (Italian), User:Julião_L (Portuguese), User:Julião Alberto (Portuguese) or User:Julião A. L. (Portuguese). Maybe these can be alternative option, in case the three first ones are not available, and if the same problem (with the Spanish alternatives) doesn't persist. --Julian_L (talk) 03:05, 3 May 2016 (UTC)
Okay, it worked using your second choice, User:Julián A. de L.. Your first choice, User:Julián A. L., was too close to Julian41, JulianaL and Julianal. —Stephen (Talk) 11:44, 3 May 2016 (UTC)
Thank you very much! --Julian_L (talk) 16:45, 3 May 2016 (UTC)

I realize that there is already a User:Kleio (w/ no activity, apparently?) and that it may be problematic to take it over, but I would very much prefer that. If it is impossible, I would also be ok with User:KIeio, with a capital i instead of a lowercase L.

Anyhow, would love to change my username as my current one is a pseudonym of mine I used when I was, well, younger. It feels whimsical and immature, and it annoys me a great deal. 𝚛𝚊𝚝𝚑𝚎𝚛𝚜𝚒𝚕𝚕𝚢 · 🇹 · 🇨 · 10:55, 4 May 2016 (UTC)

User:Kleio is likely to be a problem. It was last used in October 2015, which is only about six months ago. You could e-mail User:Kleio and ask whether he wants to keep his username, but I suspect he will want to keep it (Special:EmailUser/Kleio).
I can try User:KIeio with cap I and see if the system will permit it. Just let me know which way you want to go. —Stephen (Talk) 19:17, 5 May 2016 (UTC)
The capital letter i version would be fine, I hope it works. 𝚛𝚊𝚝𝚑𝚎𝚛𝚜𝚒𝚕𝚕𝚢 · 🇹 · 🇨 · 19:26, 5 May 2016 (UTC)
Many thanks. Kleio (t · c) 00:07, 6 May 2016 (UTC)

Hello, while creating my account i accidentally typed the "X" as a capital letter and I would please like it corrected to a lower case 'x'. x8BC8x (talk) 18:28, 13 May 2016 (UTC)

The first letter is automatically capitalized. It can’t be made into a lowercase. However, you can go into your Preferences tab and change your Signature to appear however you like. Whenever you sign your name with four tildes ~~~~, it will appear according to your preferences. —Stephen (Talk) 00:02, 13 May 2016 (UTC)

Hah!!! Ohhh alrighty then. Thanks for the info!!! x8BC8x (talk) 18:28, 13 May 2016 (UTC)
