A mountain in the Himalayas, on the border of Solukhumbu district, Koshi, Nepal and Tingri County, Shigatse, Tibet Autonomous Region, China; the world's highest mountain above sea level. The mountaineers Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, who were members of a British expedition, became the first people to reach the summit of Mount Everest—the highest mountain in the world—on this day in 1953.
