editFirst attested as gunsela in 1107. Compound of either Woen (“name of a deity”) or a personal name derived from Proto-Germanic *wôð- (“rage, anger”) and either Old Dutch sele (“hall house”) or lo (“light forest”). Formerly an independent village.
