- (Friesland, hamlet) Attested as Zuider Buiren in 1718. Calque of West Frisian Suderbuorren, a compound of suder (“southern”) and the plural form of buer (“house, cottage”).
- (Groningen) Attested as Zuidhoek in 1867. Compound of zuider (“southern, south-”) and either the plural form of boer (“farmer”) or buur (“house, cottage”). The element zuider was added to distinguish the settlement from Noorderburen.
- (Friesland, neighbourhood) The neighbourhood is named after the hamlet.
