Dutch edit

Etymology edit

From aard (earth) +‎ kloot (lump, clod).

Pronunciation edit

  • IPA(key): /ˈaːrtˌkloːt/
  • (file)
  • Hyphenation: aard‧kloot

Noun edit

aardkloot m (plural aardkloten, diminutive aardklootje n)

  1. (dated, poetic, now dysphemistic) Planet Earth
Wat is het toch oneerlijk op deze aardkloot!
How unfair life is on this planet of ours!
  2. (dated) any (rocky) planet

Usage notes edit

Kloot, when used on its own, has developed into a vulgar synonym for testikel, meaning testicle and is used as an expletive corresponding with bollocks. In the compound noun aardkloot, however, kloot has retained its original meaning of ‘lump of earth’ and is not usually considered offensive. It is restricted to literary or ironic registers.

Synonyms edit

  • (planet earth) aardbol, aarde, blauwe planeet
