Probably from Proto-Edekiri *á-ɣéré, with a systematic shift from /*ɣ/ in Proto-Yoruboid to /ɣ/ in Northeast and Southeast Yoruba dialects, and then /w/ to Central Yoruba and Northwest Yoruba dialects, with Central Yoruba dialects deleting /w/ and /w/ becoming /h/ in Northwest and Standard Yoruba.
