Etymology edit

From Ancient Greek ἄφθιτος (áphthitos, imperishable) (though the intended meaning is “unalterable”) + ἅλς (háls, salt) +‎ -ite.[1]

  1. (mineralogy) An evaporite consisting of mixed potassium and sodium sulphates; also found in the fumaroles of volcanos.
