From Germanic or Celtic origin, both from Proto-Indo-European *bʰébʰrus (beaver). Akin to French bièvre, Old High German bibar (German Biber (beaver)), Middle Dutch bēver (Dutch bever (beaver)), Old English befer (beaver), Old East Slavic бо́бръ (bóbrŭ).
