editFrom Germanic or Celtic origin, both from Proto-Indo-European *bʰébʰrus (“beaver”). Akin to French bièvre, Old High German bibar (German Biber (“beaver”)), Middle Dutch bēver (Dutch bever (“beaver”)), Old English befer (“beaver”), Old East Slavic бо́бръ (bóbrŭ).
