Attested since the 18th century. Related to bjá, bjáa and bjáta. The origin of these words is uncertain; Ásgeir Blöndal Magnússon suggests a possible derivation from Proto-Indo-European *bʰeu-. But see Proto-Indo-European *bʰeyh₂-.
