  1. (engineering) A material surface failure caused by contact stress that exceeds the material limit.
    • 1963 April, “News and Comment: Electro-Diesel economics”, in Modern Railways, page 227:
      Few serious problems have been encountered with the six prototypes so far; one of which was foreseen, the brinelling of crankshaft bearings which spend much of their time at rest but under continuous vibration, has been overcome by ensuring that the diesel engines are run up to speed at least once per shift.
